The basement carpet has been on the shortlist for updating since we had purchased our home eight years ago. It is original Berber carpeting from when the house was built in 1997, not my style and at the end of its life. It is badly stained, and it is time to go. It hasn’t made it to the top of the list because it is never JUST the carpet that needs to be replaced. Once you touch the carpet, you have to replace the baseboards, fireplace, doors, and furniture. Ok, yes the furniture doesn’t HAVE to be new at the same time, but that was the agreement I made with Craig. Once we replace the basement carpet, I get my Pottery Barn sofa. Doing all these things adds up to a chunk of change, hence why it has taken eight years to get here.

BEFORE PHOTO
Here is what the basement first looked like when we purchased the house eight years ago.
The basement had a mini-update last summer, with the addition of the built-ins around the TV and new paint. Now it is time to finish the room.

The plan is to replace the carpet in the entire basement, re-tile the fireplace surround and hearth, new base molding to match upstairs, new interior doors to match upstairs, add artwork back on the walls, and painting of all the base trim, door casings, and doors to the new trim color upstairs. After this project, golden oak will no longer live in this house :)!

PRICING OUT THE PROJECT
Now that I have the design figured out it is time to go out and price out the project!

I am getting two bids for the carpet, anytime you are doing a major project you should be getting 2-3 quotes. It helps you learn about the different products and lets you know if you are getting a fair price.

NEW FURNITURE SELECTIONS
Back to the main focus, new furniture!!! This will be my 2nd ever sofa purchase, the first being the sofa I purchased for my condo fresh out of college at Slumberland for $500. And yes I still have it! That is the sofa that is currently upstairs in the living room, it is in need of replacement as well, but that is for another day. When I worked at Pottery Barn many years ago, I vowed to myself that someday I would own one of their amazing sofas. I am getting tired of throw away furniture that doesn’t last, and I want pieces that are durable. I am starting in the basement since it is the room we use the most in the house, it is where we hang out as a family.

I have finalized the large furniture pieces of the sofa and coffee table and am now patiently waiting for a sale to pull the triggered and purchase. I had no idea the length of lead times on custom furniture. It needs to be the first thing that you purchase. The website said that typically lead times are 5-7 weeks, during busy purchasing seasons the lead times can and will increase. In my case, I will be looking at 9-10 weeks until the sofa arrives, crazy!
FINAL SELECTIONS + GETTING THINGS ON ORDER
The next step is to make final selections and get everything on order. Follow along as the project progresses!
