I had been struggling for years with my gift wrapping supplies. For a long time, I used an upright wrapping paper bin that I kept under the stairs. Every time I had to wrap something I would have to crawl under the stairs, pull out the bin, try to locate what I was looking for, and crawl back to put it away. That was too many steps; things were jammed into the bin, and I didn’t know what I had, it was a mess.
Enter the door rack system from the Container Store. I LOVE the Container Store! A store with nothing but practical and pretty ways to organize your home yes, please.
I was planning a shopping trip and decided it was time to fix how I was storing my gift wrapping supplies. The Container Store has a great planning tool that I used to customize my gift wrap system. It allows you to drag and drop the different components and rearrange them until you have designed what works for you! With my list of items in hand, I went to the store to do a final in-person assessment to make sure it was what I wanted, and I had picked the right components.
I assembled the system all by myself; I didn’t have to annoy Craig needing his help with another one of my projects. It was easy and quick.
I broke down the installation of the system step-by-step for you to help you get an idea of what the project entails and what I choose to store different gift wrapping items.
STEP 1 | FIND A DOOR
Find the perfect door in your home to install your new gift wrap station. Mine is located in our basement; it is the door to the crawl space under the stairs. I typically wrap presents on the floor in the basement while watching TV. Making it a perfect location, in the room I wrap presents!
STEP 2 | ADD TOP AND BOTTOM BRACKETS
You place the top bracket over the door and slide the bottom bracket onto the bottom of the door.
STEP 3 | INSTALL POLE
Hook the pole onto the top and bottom brackets. It may be loose and wobbly at this point we will fix that next.
STEP 4 | TIGHTEN THE POLE ONTO THE BRACKET
This is genius! You use an Allen wrench, to tighten the brackets and pole together. Keep turning the Allen wrench until the pole is tight on the door and not sliding from side-to-side.
STEP 5 | ADD ACCESSORIES
Now the fun part, time to hang the baskets! I used the Large Utility Mesh Basket to hold gift bags and collapsible boxes.
TIP: Put the taller items into the baskets while hanging, so you know how much room you will need at the top.
I used another Large Utility Mesh Basket to hold decorative tissue paper. It has made a big difference keeping the gift bags and tissue separated. I know what I have and can quickly grab what I need.
Then I added a Small Utility Mesh Basket to hold small jewelry boxes, fabric gift bags, gift tags, embellishments, a scissor, and scotch tape. I keep extra scissors and tape in another location in the house. I wanted to make it a system for wrapping one or two gifts quickly. Large wrapping sessions like Christmas I will grab multiple rolls of tape, so I don’t have to worry about running out.
I tend to purchase ribbon in bulk from Costco or Sam’s Club. You can get a lot of ribbon for your money this way. The Media Rack was the best option I found for storing my ribbon. It works great for regular sized ribbon rolls. I wish that the Container Store would come out with a basket option that would work for the bulk ribbon. It fits as you can see in the picture below, the rolls sit up a little bit.
TIP: Just because they call it a Media Rack doesn’t mean you can only use it for CDs and DVDs. Look past the suggested storage usage and see if you can use it another way.
For gift wrap storage you need two parts, a Large Basket and Gift Wrap Rack. I like that you can move the Gift Wrap Rack up or down as needed depending on the height of your gift wrap. This is also where I store my bulk white tissue paper.
Here a list of all the components I used.
PROJECT COMPLETE!
The Container Store has pre-made kits you can purchase, or you can create your own as I did. You can reorganize it at any time, by rearranging the baskets until you have the perfect solution.
There is no need to copy my exact system. Look at your gift wrap supplies and figure out what will be the best type of storage for what YOU have.
How do you organize your gifting supplies? Do you think a door mount system is an option for you?
