Hello! How can it be week three already in the One Room Challenge?!? This week I can FINALLY see progress in the master bedroom makeover. The story for the week has been painting, painting, and more painting. After this makeover, I will be taking a LONG break from painting anything.
If you missed any of my posts in the One Room Challenge series, catch up here.
Ceiling Paint
Working my way from top to bottom, I started by painting the center of the ceiling Marshmallow by Sherwin Williams. It took three coats of paint; it was a thirsty ceiling. I had a rough idea of what I wanted to do, center to be white, and one or two of the outside trays to be the wall color. But I was second-guessing it the entire time.
Crown Molding Addition
The weekend started with the crown molding installation on Friday. I didn’t do any prep work to the crown molding ahead of time. I typically like to give trim two coats of paint on sawhorses before installing. Then you only have to fill nail holes, caulk, and give it one final coat of paint.
Next came filling the nail holes and caulking the top and bottom of the molding — a crucial prep step to give you a professional look. You can learn how I achieve gap-free molding in this blog post.
The crown molding gives the room some character and a traditional feel.
Paint, Paint, Paint
The entire weekend all I did was circle the bedroom with paint. Painting the walls was the quickest part of the painting. The trim is what took forever; it required THREE coats! The worst part about painting is to go back over and do it all over again and again, LOL!
On the other hand, I love to paint because it is an inexpensive way to make a HUGE change. And boy, did the master bedroom change this weekend! I have loved watching the transformation.
Trim Color
The decision was made early on to try something different and paint all the trim molding the same color as the walls. I have always loved the look in photos and decided that for the One Room Challenge, I needed to go big. The entire time I have been second-guessing myself.
I do tend to like to switch things up often; this is the third paint color in the master bedroom in nine years. Painting the trim means a ton of work later on if I ever want to change it again. Probably even purchasing new trim molding since it is already coated in so many layers of paint as is.
Craig has been questioning why we even installed crown molding if you can’t see. But to me, it creates a subtle elegance.
A Monochromatic Room
Even though I was scared the entire time, I absolutely LOVE how it turned out! It makes the room look rich.
Coming Up Next Week
We are heading down to Minneapolis on Friday for a weekend shopping trip and to spend time with Craig’s parents. I need to go to IKEA to look at and purchase the nightstands to DIY Shagreen, fingers crossed this turns out how I have it pictured in my head!
My mom is coming on Monday and we are going to put the wallpaper up! I have spent lots of time removing wallpaper, but this will be my first time installing wallpaper!
