After completing my first One Room Challenge this past fall, I had no intention of jumping in again this spring. But after working from home these past few weeks, consistently staring at different rooms in my house, and spending lots of time scrolling beautiful rooms on Instagram, I got the remodeling itch. So here I am going for two challenges in a row!
What is the One Room Challenge? It is a design event that occurs twice a year, where 20 featured guests and hundreds of guest participants makeover a room in their home. Check out the other participants in the One Room Challenge here to get some inspiration for your future project!
Are you ready to learn what room I am tackling this time? I am doing another bedroom project, this time, the guest bedroom! With no scheduled guests in the near future, now is the perfect time to tear apart the room.
If this is your first time visiting the Birchwood Dream blog, welcome! A little about myself, my name is Aubrey Costello, and I created the blog Birchwood Dream to document and share my journey in updating the 1997 home we have had now for nine years. I love crafting and DIY projects and have found the blog to be an excellent outlet to share it with you!
The Starting Point
Now don’t get me wrong I loved the Kate Spade, and Jonathan Adler inspired guest bedroom. Craig gets the head spins in that room because of how bright the green walls are. Over the past few years, I have been moving away from bright colors towards neutral colors. It is time for something different.
I am also going to tackle reorganizing the linen closet, which is located in the guest bedroom as well.
I want to declutter the room as well, remove the busy photo collage wall and gold vinyl dots.
The Mood Board
I am going for a modern nautical theme in the guest bedroom, with deep navy walls, natural basket elements, and a few touches of black.
The Plan
The bones of the room are in good shape. We installed new carpet, trim, and doors two years ago when we replaced the entire basement carpet. This project will only be cosmetic with fresh paint, bedding, and accessories.
For the walls, I was considering wallpaper again, but through research, I was reminded of a faux painting technique that looks like denim. I remember Ralph Lauren faux painting techniques well. My mom and I have fond memories of faux painting the walls in the office at my parent’s house to look like leather. I remembered how you have to work fast because the glaze tries quickly. What sold me on the denim technique was that you taped off sections on the wall which gives you time to brush the glaze before it dries. Making it possible for a one-person job.
I am bouncing around a bunch of different ideas for the rest of the room. I have just started ordering some of the bedding as I am finalizing my plan. With the extra two weeks in this challenge, I am not worried about time and am going to take this at a nice and relaxed pace. I am hoping to have more time for smaller DIY projects to share with you as well. Tune in next week to see how the room is progressing!
